Wood Carved Frame Shops In Mumbai
I posted this photo with wood carved frames on my Instagram account recently and many people asked me about frame shop information, so here it is. The shop for wood carved frames in the photo above had many cute frames, but the prices I was given were very high. For example, big frame (30 cm x 17 cm) with paint coating was 2,500 Rupees (US$40) and that does not come with a back or glass. It’s just a frame.
I have been wanting to create a frame collage on a wall with wood carved frames for a while. It’s an inexpensive way to decorate your wall and the materials are available in Mumbai, India. As there is no IKEA to buy cheap decorative items in Mumbai, finding materials to decorate home on a budget, believe it or not, is challenging.
For wood carved frames shopping, I went to SV Road (Swami Vivekanand Road) and got out of my car at the beginning of the frame shop row on the same side as the Jama Masjid, the beautiful white mosque (photo below). I stopped at each shop and started asking prices one by one. I went all the way down to the last one, Craft Wood Art, that was located closest to the Jama Masjid, the beautiful white mosque.
CRAFT WOOD ART
I came to a frame shop called Craft Wood Art owned by Naushad Ahmed. The photo below is Craft Wood Art, the shop closest to Jama Masjid on the left side of the mosque if you are facing it.
I have purchased 5 frames in total from this guy in the photo. This person in the photo is Naushad Ahmed. The price he gave me was the least expensive among all the shops I went on the left side of the Jama Masjid when facing the mosque and I could tell that he was being honest. For a frame sized roughly in 30 cm by 17 cm without any coating finish, he asked for 750 Rupees (US$12.5). Most other shops asked for 1,200 Rupees. I still found 750 Rupees expensive because if you look closely you can see nails, the finish looks very rough and the wood frames had dust all over. I managed to buy one oval and one rectangular in the same size (approximately 30 cm x 17 cm) for 600 Rupees (US$10) each, thus 1,200 Rupees for both. This price was what I was asked to pay for one at other stores. I also bought one mid-size circular one for 500 Rupees (US$8.5). I asked him to give any of my readers the same prices. If you are Indian who speak Hindi or Marathi, though, I wonder you would get even better pricing. Anyways, since he was kind to me, I hope that I can help him get some more customers. I think he should start painting some frames like his neighbor shops, too.

I also bought a small frame from a store Hassaan because I liked the design. I bought a small size frame (left on the photo below) with no finish or coating for 350 Rupees (US$6). Some of the frames Hassaan was selling were really cute. You might want to check them out, too, if you ever get to these shops on SV Road.

I bought a paint from Empire Paint Shop (next post) and painted the frames myself. Actually while I was painting, my helper came and took over the task. How lucky am I?!
I hope you enjoyed my post on wood carving frames and shops!

Those frames are gorgeous. And you painted them so well, too! The prices are envious as well. Getting frames of that size in Japan would be much more expensive, I think. (Or maybe I’m just not a very good thrift shopper?)

Miwa, I would imagine that the frames in Japan are much more expensive especially if they were made with real wood! The product quality here (hard to see in photos) is not up to any standard of work you would find in the U.S. or Japan, but for the price you pay here, I think it’s not too bad. If I lived in Japan, I would go straight to IKEA and buy decorative items which would be as cheap and would not require my extra work. 🙂 I wonder if you can find something quirky like this at a second hand shop in Japan.

Hi….firstly thanks for this awesome post….I am in love with these frames and bought a few…But missed out on buying the paints….Can you please tell me what paint you used to paint on these frames?
Kaho says
Jalpa, thank you for the comment!! I think it was something like icy mint or something like that. I was going for mint green. It is the same color as my study, but on the frames, the same color paint looks more blue than green. You can see the mint green color on the frames on this post about how I transformed pink kid’s room into blue base room. I’m sorry that I forgot the name of the paint. I hope this is helpful!!

Hey if you could tell me the type of the paint…im not from mumbai…so need to buy from a local paint shop..i don’t know wat kind of paint to ask for.
Kaho says
It’s a water base paint. In terms of colors, you can ask for a swatch. It’s a catalogue of colors. You can see different colors in a swatch and pick one from there. All the paint shops should have a swatch of paint colors. I hope this helps!!
jalpa says
Actually there are diff types of paints available at the paint shop. If u still have the paint bottle, can u read out the name or the brand. Sorry for the trouble but it wud really help
Kaho says
I don’t have the exact bottle as I used it all and threw it away a long time ago. I have a few other bottles and they all say asian paints royale. I hope this is helpful!

Hi!!! I’m so glad and thankful to you for this post. I was in Mumbai in Jan 2015 and while traveling from The hotel towards SV road saw these wood craft shops and quickly stopped the taxi and got off . I did check out every shop on that street and recognize the shops in your pictures so well. I did see a very unusual cicular frame in a shop which was quite large compared to the other shops and had some items on display. I instantly fell in love with the piece and was all out to get it but the only hitch was that it was extremely chunky ( the rose carvings were more like wood roses and were about 4″ in thickness) my problem was that it was the day I was traveling back to Colombo and didn’t have weight left. The person quoted 4000 INDIAN RUPEES. I still think of that piece and just googled to check if I could find the name of the road, when I found your post. Thank you so much.

Thank you for finding my blog and your comment. I know what you mean abut the price. They quote you such high price. I don’t know why and I think it is such a shame. I hope you will have some time to go back to Mumbai and bargain!! By the way, I loved visiting Colombo! What a beautiful city and Sri Lanka is amazing!
