Paying Tribute To The Late Kobe Bryant
I read an article on The Philippine Star newspaper with a photograph about the mural created to pay tribute to the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. The mural was created on the Tenement Basketball court in Taguig, Manila. According to the Inquirer, the tenement visual artists spent 18 hours to complete it.
The Tenement Court has previously featured the murals of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, famous boxer Manny Pacquiao, and Santa Claus. Paul George appeared at the Tenement Court as a guest coach for Nike’s grassroots program, Nike Rise Tour in Manila in 2015. A month later, LeBron James visited the tenement court as a part of the Nike Rise Tour. (via)
The Tenement Court is a public basketball court. It is the most well known court in the Philippines and an iconic place for Filipino street basketball. Because of its fame, it seems to have attracted many tourists. However, the court is in a courtyard of the tenement residential buildings. If people decide to go out there to visit and see the beautiful mural, I hope that they are respectful to the people who live there.
To better explain what the Tenement Court in Taguig is and for you to understand how special this court is to the locals, here is a great video for you to watch.
Visiting The Tenement Court
In case you would like to visit the Tenement Court to see this beautiful tribute mural of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, here are my two cents.
1. Finding The Location
If you type out “Tenement Taguig”, you will pull up the location on Google Map. If you are a foreigner, I recommend that you go there with a driver. The roads to get there seemed a bit complicated.
2. Parking
There is no parking. We asked a guard at the tenement gate and he pointed to the street to park our car right in front of the gate. So, that’s what we did. We gave him some money (50 pisos) for parking when we left.
3. Belongings
I left my purse in my car where you can’t see well. If you have to take your belonging, don’t bring many valuables.
4. Camera
I carried my DSLR and a cell phone with me.
5. Company
I went with my friend and my driver to keep me company. It is more fun to go with friends, but also it’s safer to go with friends especially to places where you’re unfamiliar in a foreign country.
6. Outfit
I wore a T-shirt and jeans. Keep it simple and casual. I tried not to stand out.
7. Where To Take Photos
The 5th floor is the best height to take photos of the whole mural according to the residents.
I hope this will be helpful.
