Sofa Slipcovers by Novelty Furnishing in Mumbai
Do you need sofa slipcovers to spruce up your home in Mumbai? Do you have white couches and little kids or animals? You are in a furnished apartment and not so into the furniture color you have? Fret not. Making slipcovers in Mumbai is affordable (at least for one or two)! Here is what I did for our home.
When we are overseas for my husband’s job, we are usually assigned a furnished housing. I am grateful for that as it removes a huge amount of stress post-arrival. However, it means that your home would not reflect your style. If you like a particular style, this living situation requires a lot of creativity.
How you incorporate your style using pre-existing furniture and architecture to create the original look that reflects your style is a challenge. It is so much easier to furnish your home with your own furniture. At the same time, I thrive in these challenges.
If you would like to know how I have changed our living spaces in the past, please find the posts under the Interior Design tab.
For this post, I would like to show you how a color of one sofa using slipcovers made by Novelty Furnishing can change the mood of a room. We had one sofa that I did not care for the color. It was in a light brown which does not match the color theme in the living room: gray, white, mustard yellow and green. Since I live in India, the land of textile and inexpensive tailoring and upholstering, I thought I should invest my money in making slipcovers to change the look.
Here is the result after dressing our sofa with slipcovers.
There are 3 noticeable differences in these two photos above. One is, of course, the sofa cover. Can you find two others?
They are the winter tree wall decal & the placement of the white rounded lamp.
I love the slipcovers. However, one thing I did not realize until the sofa was recovered was that the mustard color yellow did not quite match the shade of gray I picked. Oh well…
Process of Making a Sofa Cover
1. You go to a furniture store and pick a fabric.
2. A tailor comes to measure your furniture to estimate the total amount of fabric required to make covers. In my case, a 3 seater sofa and a foot stool.
3. The same tailor comes back again with the fabric and cut the fabric while measuring at your residence.
4. When the slip covers are ready, they would call you and the staff comes back to your residence to put the covers on the pieces.
Novelty Furnishing
There are numerous furniture stores all over Mumbai that it’s not so easy to pick one. I went to 3 different places and I liked Novelty Furnishings the best. What helped me choose Novelty Furnishings to make slipcovers for our sofa was that they had a wide selection of fabric and had the type of fabric I wanted with a reasonable price for the service. Their good customer service helped me decide as well.
By the time I decided on which vendor to use to make slipcovers, 5 months had passed since our arrival. It was partly because of my procrastination, so I am to be blamed. Settling down in a new home, especially in a new country, takes time.
I cannot emphasize enough that patience is virtue.

Love what you’ve done there Kaho….clever! Do you know if those guys do re-upholstery as well as slip covers? I made a bad selection of fabric last year for the art deco sofa set we had upholstered and it’s already worn out.

I would like to say that they would re-upholster as well. It’s worth asking them!

Do not use Novelty Furnishing in Mumbai especially if you don’t live in the city. They are all crooks. I spent almost $400 on chair covers bought them back home to NYC and they don’t fit. Spoke to Novelty they won’t give a refund nor will they pay for the postage so that it can be sent back for further alteration. I will never use this place. Bad service, bad attitude, cheap workmanship and overall bad end to end customer service. NOT RECOMMENDED

I am sorry that you had a bad experience with them. Mine was all positive and I am fine with the outcome. I think other readers have to try themselves.
