I’m no expert in decorating homes. However, I have experiences decorating a variety of homes in various settings as we have moved from one home to another over the span of 22 years. We’ve lived in 13 homes, mostly rental, in 10 cities in 6 countries.
I am in love with the minimalist style and Scandinavian design. The aesthetic of the minimalist design is not only pleasing to the eyes, but it also suits our lifestyle. As we pack and move every 2 to 3 years, having less makes more sense. It makes my repetitive job to set up our family life in a new home much easier.
Therefore, we don’t own many wall decorations. However, with the limited items I have, I would like to show how I fill our many walls to make each home ours and cozy.
Here are some tips. I hope you will find this helpful.
1. SQUARE FRAMES
Square frames make it easier to decorate walls. You can align them vertically or horizontally. You can put four of them together or have just two. They allow you to be flexible with the space. Thus, I like square shape frames. Rectangle frames are great, too. What makes square frames special is that you can put portrait or landscape photos. The square shape allows rearranging and reframing easier.

2. HANG ARTWORK AT EYE LEVEL
This is probably very basic. However, it’s good to be reminded. Remember where the frames are decorated in a museum with high ceilings. The art frames are always on our eye level. The same should be practiced at home as well. Eye level allows people to appreciate art pieces without making them tilt their heads.

3. ONE BIG ARTWORK IN A BIG WALL IS OK
You may want to fill big wall space. I totally get it. Yes, it would look really cool to have gallery walls everywhere. Filling walls would make you feel “settled-in” in your home. When I see walls that are filled with frames and wall decors, it exhausts my mind. (My problem.) I’m always thinking about packing up and unpacking. Having many frames is a lot of work and weight. Therefore, if you have a few, that is good enough. Have one favorite frame rather than bunch of frames that you don’t really care.

4. ALIGN WALL HANGINGS AT THE TOP LINE
There are many different ways to decorate walls with frames and decorations. If you don’t know how high you would like to hang wall decors, especially your big frames, try to align the top of all the decor pieces. It creates a clean line and flow for your eyes.

5. GALLERY WALLS
A key to create a gallery wall with frames in various sizes is to have a big piece in the center. Hang smaller ones around the big one that becomes a focal point. I like to keep the same distance between frames which allows a cleaner look. It’s like a puzzle.
The best way to figure out how to create a gallery wall is to use cut out paper in the sizes of your frames and use them on the wall to see the best arrangement. However, I know that most people wouldn’t be inclined to do this. For those who would like an easier solution, here is my strategy.
1. Arrange frames on the floor.
2. Place the main frame that would become the focal point. I suggest the biggest frame, but it can be something else. Place others around the main frame.
3. Move the frames around until you find the right design. It will click when you see the best combo.
4. When you find the favorite arrangement, take a photo on your phone.
5. While you use the photo as your guide, hang the frames on the wall. Start with the center frame.
*If you have no time for shuffling designs, pick a main featured frame and place in the middle. Place next bigger size frames around the big frames and place smaller frames on the outer periphery.

6. WALL SHELVES
I’m a fan of wall shelves. Wall shelves would be a good way for you to decorate your home for any space. It adds more character and fills space with various decorations. You can use frames, books, toys, decorative pieces, clocks, plants, and more. You can easily change decorations and update the space more easily. If you live in a rental home and you don’t have the liberty to make holes wherever you want, having wall shelves would help as you limit the number of holes.
