When I saw my oldest daughter reading to our baby boy and my second listening to her read, I said to my girls “Wait! Don’t move!” I ran downstairs to grab my camera and rushed back upstairs. Our baby is 6 weeks old. He’s like a big marshmallow sitting on my daughter’s lap. It’s sweet to see that my oldest, 7-year-old wanted to read a story to her baby brother and my second, 4-year-old looking at the book over her sister’s shoulder. It is precious. Looking at the three kids together in peace, I realize it was worth going through painful three pregnancies. My oldest has been a huge help especially our newborn gets fussy unless he’s held by someone. I hear that it’s a very boy thing.
When I look at my son, I feel that babies have gender neutral look and I haven’t seen many differences in taking care of a baby boy versus a baby girl. However, a diaper changing business is completely different. I’ve got my son’s pee shot on my forehead about a week into his arrival. Then, another time was on my shirt. Last week, I thought he and I met eye to eye when I laid him down for a diaper change, but it was just him trying to pee and as I opened up the diaper, the pee came straight up as if it was a water fountain.
My son gets fussy very easily which I am guessing due to indigestion or the gas in his stomach. He started fussing again while my daughter reads to him and she is comforting him in the photo above. She’s only seven and much more mature than when I was at her age. I am very proud of her!
Sneak Peek of Nursery
I haven’t completed the nursery, but this is how it looks from the doorway. The wall is lavender. This room used to be my daughters’ play room until our baby boy was born. It used to look like this. We didn’t find out the gender until our baby was born, but I thought that we were having another girl based on 6 online Chinese calendars which is said to be 99% accurate, but in my case, it turned out to be all wrong. I guess I was in the 1% who gets the wrong prediction! I thought if we had a boy, he would just have to live with it for a year or so until we move and we’re doing it. Babies don’t have opinions, do they? I took all the toys to our downstairs room and converted it into a new media/play room. The posts for the two rooms will be up once I complete the rooms. It will be a while…

This is the most precious, heart melting post I have read in the longest time. Your girls are just the best. Your eldest daughter is like a mini you 🙂
I just have to tweet this.
When I was little I always wanted a baby brother….was so excited when my lil cousin was born…I was 7 then too.
Kaho says
Awwww, thank you!! I love to hear that you think my oldest is mini me. 😀 My eldest is thrilled to have a baby brother, but this morning, she said she wished her brother was a girl. I asked her why and she said so that she could play with her girl toys with him. I understand where she’s coming from. My second daughter was saying that she wanted a sister from the time I was pregnant and that’s probably from the same reason. My eldest is very loving to her brother and great to him. So is my second girl. I am thankful for that. Kids are interesting!

Having the oldest child read to the younger ones is not only great for bonding, but great for literacy and language development in ALL your kids. You’ll be surprised how quickly your second child joins in the reading!
As for the purple room, there’s nothing wrong with bending (or breaking) a few gender stereotypes. Your son will be none the worse for wear!
I hope you are all well!
Kaho says
Aww, Thanks! I imagine my second one will have an easier time learning how to read. She learned alphabet earlier than my first. It’s interesting that now I’m so used to seeing his room in lavender, I started to believe that’s a color for boys. 🙂 Thanks for visiting my blog!
