THE MUMBAI CITY TRAVEL GUIDE
This Mumbai Travel Guide is your guide to see the best that the city has to offer.
When you travel, you want to optimize the time and money. However, unless you know the city well it’s a hard task. It requires a lot of research and the time to read up on many guide books, reviews and articles and stare at maps. (Thank goodness for Google Map!)
I hope this guide will help you so that it will save you a headache for your research and find out what suits the best for your itinerary in Mumbai. I have been away from Mumbai for a while. Please make sure to check information with the original source for the details and update. Feel free to leave a comment under the post if you notice anything that needs to be corrected. Thank you!
FOR EXPATS
I have more recommendations for those of you who will spend a longer time in Mumbai and more relevant to the residences. Please click here to jump to the MUMBAI CITY GUIDE page for more recommendations.
HOW THIS GUIDE WORKS
You can click on the photos with names typed on them to jump to the blog post for more detailed information or click on the link provided.
This guide offers options based on geographic locations. Mumbai is a mega city with lots of traffic. It is wise to stick to one general area (South or North) for a day plan. If you would like, you may combine different “options” provided here to create an itinerary for a day.
SOUTH MUMBAI
OPTION A
KALA GHODA
PRINCE OF WALES MUSEUM
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum
For the AC preferred tourists i.e. children and people who are not used to the heat of India, this is a good option. It can be placed in the morning or in the afternoon.
*The side note: I am totally for using the local name. However, there is something to be said about the easier and catchy name. I refer this museum as Prince of Wales Museum on this post in order to make it easier for the readers who are not familiar with the name. I hope that is okay.
If you would like to read more about the Prince of Wales Museum (CSMVS Museum), please click on the photo above or the link below.
Prince of Wales Museum
DINING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KALA GHODA
Kala Ghoda is known for an art district. The Kala Ghoda District is right behind the Prince of Wales Museum (CSMVS Museum). You could walk to Kala Ghoda from the museum, but if you are with small kids or elderly visitors, I would hop in a car.
THE PANTRY
The Pantry has some nice cafe food that caters to many. It is a good option especially if you are with kids.
For more information, click on the photo above or the link below.
The Pantry
KALA GHODA CAFE
Kala Ghoda Cafe is one of my favorite places in Mumbai. If you are in a small group, I recommend Kala Ghoda Cafe. Kala Ghoda Cafe is located right around the corner from The Pantry. Expect to wait outside for a bit to get a table unless you arrive way before the lunch time. They open at 8:00 a.m. I would not recommend it to a big group as the seating options are limited.
For more on Kala Ghoda Cafe, click on the photo above or the link below.

If you have the time after lunch, you can walk over to some recommendations below here.
SHOPPING RECOMMENDATIONS IN KALA GHODA
SAN CHA TEA SHOP
San-Cha is a lovely little boutique. Tea is a good option for souvenir if your families and friends drink tea. It’s light, small and from India! San-Cha is two stores down from Kala Ghoda Cafe.
To learn more about San-Cha, click on the photo above or the link below.

FILTER SHOP
If you are into modern art and design shops, Filter is for you. It is just a short block walk from the cafes.
To read more about Filter Shop, click on the photo above or the link below.
Filter Shop
The Knesset Eliyahoo, a beautiful blue synagogue that is the second oldest Sephardic synagogue in Mumbai, is right by the Filter Shop.
CHUMBAK
Chumbak is like Indian cuteness on steroids! Kala Ghoda location is also a short walk from Filter.
For a blog post on Chumbak, please click on the photo above or the link below.
OPTION B
FORT
For those who would like to take photos of the Victorian Gothic Revival Architecture in India, there’s the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, also formerly known as Victoria Terminus.
CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI TERMINUS
You can also request a tour of the building. Below is the link to the information offered on Magic Mumbai website.

DINING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FORT
BRITANNIA & CO.
For those of you who would like to taste the history of Mumbai, Britannia & Co. is for you! Britannia is a Parsi food restaurant. (Parsi means Persians and they are descendents of Persian Zoroastrians who emigrated to Mumbai to avoid religious persecution.)
If you are curious about the dining experience at Britannia & Co., click on the photo above or the link below.

STARBUCKS AT HORNIMAN CIRCLE
The first Starbucks in all of India at the historical site, Horniman Circle, is worth seeing. It is beautifully decorated. Sometimes when you travel, it makes you feel comfortable and at home to be immersed in the familiar environment. You don’t have to make yourself believe that you have to be in a completely foreign environment at all times.

SHOPPING RECOMMENDATIONS IN FORT
BOMBAY PAPERIE
If you are a big fan of Indian design and would like to buy uniquely from Mumbai and India, you can check out Bombay Paperie. Bombay Paperie’s wrapping papers are absolutely gorgeous. Their paper products would make a great souvenir and are not as heavy as fabric items.
I never had a chance to post photos of the Bombay Paperie store, but I wrote about the Bombay Paperie, its founder and story behind on my blog. If you would like to read about Bombay Paperie, please click HERE, on the photo below or the link.
OPTION C
COLABA
GATEWAY OF INDIA
For more about the Gateway of India, please click on the photo above or the link below.
The Gateway of India
TAJ MAHAL PALACE HOTEL
If you wish to take photos of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel building, I recommend you go to the Gateway of India first. That is the place you can take photos of the whole building of Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. If you get dropped off at the front door of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, you will be confused since you won’t see the building you see in photos. The very first time I went to Taj Mahal Palace, I was standing right next to the hotel and I asked my husband where the hotel was. The building is so massive that you would not be able to see the whole building unless you stand far away from it. The best place is the square in front of the Gateway of India.
TOUR OF TAJ MAHAL PALACE HOTEL
A walking tour of the hotel is available. To make a reservation, you can click here for more information. Unless you stay at the hotel, you can’t use the facility of the hotel obviously, but you’ll be able to walk in and see the courtyard.
ELEPHANTA ISLAND
Going to Elephanta Island would be a day trip.
I finally went to Elephanta Island several months before our departure. I did not think I would make it because I always don’t feel comfortable with a boat ride, but it turned out that it was my overthinking. If you are like me, don’t worry. You can read about my visit at Elephanta Island along with a report on a boat ride from the Gateway of India to the Elephanta Island in the link below or simply click on the photo.
I recommend that you leave for Elephanta Island in the morning. By the time you return to the Gateway of India where you took a boat from to go to Elephanta Island, you might be very tired. Below are several dining options for you after you get off the boat.
DINING RECOMMENDATIONS IN COLABA
SEA LOUNGE AFTERNOON TEA
If you would love to chill and indulge in the luxurious time at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, I recommend having an afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge. Even though it is called an “afternoon tea”, it’s more like a dinner time to me as it starts at 3:30 pm and ends at 7:00 pm.
If you are with young children and you do not want to spend that much money with young kids (it was not our optimal option for an afternoon activity with our young kids at the time), I will list a few other options below.
To read more about my experience of the afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge, please click on the photo or the link below.
Afternoon Tea at The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
LE 15 CAFE
If you would like have a dessert, treat your kids with some sweets, snacks or even have a dinner, Le 15 Cafe in Colaba is a short walk from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
I did not have a chance and time to write about Le 15 Cafe as they opened closed to the end of our time. I featured their dessert shop Le 15 Patisserie on my blog which was my go-to place to buy macarons for gifts, get togethers and parties.

THE TABLE
Another option to have snack, late lunch or dinner or even some drinks is The Table which is located right by the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. It would be a minute walk from the hotel.

OPTION D
AREA FROM LOWER PAREL TO MALABAR HILL
The Lower Left Side of The Mumbai Peninsula
If you would like to see something so Mumbai and different from any places you visit in India, Dobi Ghat is for you. The city has been talking about doing a make over of Dobi Ghat, which is 150 years old, even when I lived there. I don’t know the updated situation of the place and whether you can see what I saw or not. Please research online before you go. Here is one article I found which was written and published on Hindustan Times on May 18, 2018.
Mumbai’s 150-year-old Dhobi Ghat to get makeover, washing machines over next 3 years
DHOBI GHAT
I loved seeing the Dobi Ghat. We went there a bit late. I recommend going to Dhobi Ghat in the morning. If you would like to learn further more about Dhobi Ghat, please click on the photo or the link below for my blog post.
Dhobi Ghat ☆ Mumbai’s Open Air Washing Colony
HAJI ALI DARGAH
Floating Mosque for the Sunset
I had a chance to visit Haji Ali in March of 2016, which was 3 months before our departure from Mumbai. I did not have a chance to write about it, but I was glad I visited. It was one of those architectures that I saw every time I drove to the south and drove back from the south and wondered what it would be like to walk to the Haji Ali. I was really glad that I was able to check it off my bucket list. Haji Ali Dargah is famous for the sunset. You might want to go there in the evening when the sun sets. During the monsoon season when the waves are high, it is probably not the ideal time to take a walk to the Haji Ali Dargah.
BANGANGA WATER TANK
If you seek for something uniquely Mumbai and the place that was visited by some famous people, then here is an option for you: Banganga Water Tank. When Duke of Cambridge Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Kate went to Mumbai, they visited Banganga Water Tank.
Have you seen a beautiful music video of “Hymn For The Weekend” by Coldplay? Part of it was filmed in Mumbai. I don’t know all the locations used for the film, but one of the places that they used to film was Banganga Water Tank (if you go to 3:05 and 3:10, you will see the water tank). Please read my blog post for more detailed information on Banganga Water Tank with photography.
MANI BHAVAN GHANDI MEMORIAL MUSEUM
If you visit the birth country of Gandhi, how about including an educational visit to learn about Mahatma Gandhi at Mani Bhavan? It will promise a very calm and peaceful time.
To read about the Gandhi Memorial Museum “Mani Bhavan”, please lick the link below.
CHOR BAZAAR
(“Chor Bazaar” does not technically belong to these areas. It is actually right in between the Lower Parel and Kala Ghoda area.)
Chor Bazaar is the area where antique shops line up on streets one after another. The name literally means thieves market. It is a fun area to walk around to see some items that you may not find anywhere else.
If you would like to go to Chor Bazaar, please click on the photo above or the link below for a guide to visit the Chor Bazaar.
Chor Bazaar Antique Market
*Chor Bazaar is closed on Fridays.
DINING RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE GENERAL LOWER PAREL AREA
CAFE ZOE
In case you are in the area of Dhobi Ghat and Haji Ali Dharga, Cafe Zoe is a wonderful place. It is one of my favorite places to go when I was in the area.
To read more about Cafe Zoe, click on the photo above or the link below for the blog post.

SWATI SNACKS
I had a chance to go to Swati Snacks once with my son and I absolutely loved it. I happened to not have my DSLR camera with me, so I did not take photos of the interior of the restaurant and thus, I never wrote about it, but it would definitely be one of the places I recommend.
It is relatively close to Chor Bazaar, so I recommend going to Swati Snacks if you are hungry for local favorites. Don’t worry, I think it’s a good place and you would not get sick.
I love their dosa, pani puri (sweet sauce), sev puri (chaat with small noodle like chips on top), and dahi puri (yogurt sauce). If you go there and don’t know what to order, just order one of the dosa dishes, pani puri, sev puri and dahi puri.

OPTION A
KANHERI CAVES AT SANJAY GANDHI NATIONAL PARK
I think that Kanheri Caves are a good alternative to Elephanta Island if you would like to avoid the boat ride. You can drive up to just under the stairs before the Kanheri Caves. The Kanheri Caves felt much more chill and serene than Elephanta Island. Since you can get there by car, it feels like it takes less time to coordinate the trip to get there. The drive to Sanjay Gandhi National Park is easy.
You can read about our trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in my blog post. Please click the photo above or the link below.

LE PAIN QUOTIDIEN IN BKC
UPDATE
I just learned that Le Pain Quotidien in BKC closed. It saddened me to learn this since this was one of my family’s favorite restaurants to have Sunday brunch.
Le Pain Quotidien in BKC is recommended because it is one straight shot on the Western Express Highway from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is nice, cool and delicious. If there is no traffic on Western Express Highway, it should take about 30 minutes from the Kanheri Caves to Le Pain Quotidien in BKC. If there is a traffic, it could take up to an hour.
To read more about Le Pain Quotidien, please click the link below.
Le Pain Quotidien
If you need to go somewhere closer, you can stop at Oberoi Mall.
Oberoi Mall is a good size modern mall. I don’t have any specific recommendations, but in case you need to grab some food more quickly, it is an option.
KHAR SOCIAL
If you can wait till you have lunch and don’t mind a little longer ride (not because of the distance, but because of the possible traffic), I would love for you to try Khar Social in Bandra West. Khar Social became our favorite restaurant to go to for many occasions. We loved their breakfast as well as their lunch. It is a great place for dinner as well. Khar Social has dishes that locals would call original of Mumbai. You should ask the floor staff for their recommendations. Their breakfast rocks. The best part is that their pricing is very kind to our wallets and the interior design is hip.
Social has many locations in Mumbai. In fact, when Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went to Mumbai, they went to Colaba Social. If you are in Bandra, you can go to Khar Social in Khar (Khar area is next to Bandra area).
If you would like to learn more about Khar Social, please click on the photo above or the link below.

OPTION B
BANDRA WEST
Bandra West (different from Bandra East) is in the suburbs located above the Sea Link bridge (you should see it). The Sea Link connects the upper suburbs of Mumbai with the South Mumbai. South Mumbai is known for its historical and colonial Mumbai. Bandra West is the area developed first by the Portuguese settlers and then it became a British territory. There are many Catholic churches in the area as a legacy of the history. It is also a home to many Bollywood as well as Cricket stars. Bandra West is also nicknamed as “Bollywood Stars Playground”.
AUTO-RICKSHAW RIDE
If you drive up north from South Mumbai and cross the Sea Link, the first thing you may notice is probably the auto-rickshaws. Auto-rickshaws are not allowed in the South Mumbai, but they are abundant in Bandra West and the north of the area.
It’s fun to ride an auto (that is how locals call them, but I always called them a rickshaw). I find it safe for the most part. Personally I never had any bad experience myself. I have ridden on a rickshaw or tuktuk in other cities and countries and I find that an auto-rickshaw ride in Mumbai is the best in terms of convenience, ease and safety. The autos (or rickshaws) in Mumbai have a meter, so you don’t have to negotiate the fare. The best of all they are very inexpensive. I always gave them a little tip.
If you go to Bandra West, how about taking a rickhshaw ride to get around? It is fun!! I used to use them on a daily basis when we didn’t have a car. That was when I spotted more places that intrigued my curiosity.
What not to love about a selfie on a rickshaw? You’ll keep awesome photos to remember about your experience!
A FEW WORDS TO KNOW
You can use English words for “right” and “left”. Straight is “sida”. You pronounce as it spelled. Stop is “bas” (You pronounce it like “boss” with “a” instead of “o”.) It literally means enough or just. If you say it, the rickshaw driver should stop where you want to. You might want to say it a little before you need to stop so that the driver hears you and stops. Slow is “dhire” like “dee-reh”. If you want the driver to slow down, you can say “dhire dhire” to emphasize. I hope this helps!
WALL ART TOUR IN BANDRA WEST
Chapel Road in Bandra West is like a street art museum. You can stroll around on Waroda Road and Chapel Road to see the wall arts. A very well known former British expat’s blog called “Bombay Jules” wrote about the wall arts in the area. Please click HERE to read about her blog post on her blog. If you like photography or into wall murals for your social media, this is the place you want to be.
HOW TO GET THERE
It is easy to find Waroda Road and Chapel Road on Google Map. Google map will be your friend for this walk. Waroda Road and Chapel Road are one way streets. I suggest you enter Waroda Road from Hill Road. It is behind American Express Bakery where there is usually a line of people shopping.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RESTAURANTS IN BANDRA WEST
THE BIRDSONG ORGANIC CAFE
If you do a wall art tour in Bandra West, I suggest you check out one of my favorites, The Birdsong Organic Cafe.
If you are curious about what it looks like, you can read about my blog post on The Birdsong Cafe. Please click on the photo or the link below. There is also a map on the post.
THE BIRDSONG ORGANIC CAFE
THE YOGA HOUSE
If you would like to experience a healthy vegetarian restaurant inside of a yoga studio, I highly recommend The Yoga House. It is probably the most serene place in all of Mumbai. It would feel as though you teleported to somewhere outside of Mumbai when you enter. Their lunch is delicious. The Yoga House would be a good place to go for an afternoon relaxation after a busy morning touring around in town.
If you would like to read more about The Yoga House, please go to my blog post through the photo above or the link below.

PALI VILLAGE CAFE
If you are looking for a place with a great Indian rustic interior design, I recommend Pali Village Cafe. They offer western food and I always enjoyed the meal experience there.
Please click on the photo above or the link below for more information and photography of Pali Village Cafe.
Pali Village Cafe
PALI BHAVAN
I didn’t have a chance to write about Pali Bhavan, but it is one of my favorite places and it is an Indian restaurant. The Indian food at Pali Bhavan is delicious. Pali Bhavan and Pali Village Cafe are owned by the same person which explains the similarities in the interior design.

KHAR SOCIAL
Khar Social became our to go place for a weekend brunch towards the end of our time. It is a good place for lunch, dinner or just coffee. For those who want to experience hearty modern Indian food, I would go there. The best part is that their very reasonable pricing. I especially love their rustic industrial interior design.

SUZETTE
Suzette was one of our favorite places to go to with our kids in Mumbai. This small cozy restaurant is owned by a French couple. Therefore, authentic French crepes are available at this creperie in Mumbai. Suzette’s crepes were very popular among Mumbaikars. There is another outlet in Colaba, so if you are not in Bandra West, you can still try their crepes.

OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MUMBAI
Mumbai has so many options for great dining experiences, but if we were to pick our favorite in the 3 years we spent our time there, there have to be two who were founded by a Canadian chef, Kelvin Cheung. We have been his fans since our friends introduced him to us back when Kelvin was still working for another restaurant called Ellipsis. To read about Kelvin and Ellipsis, please click HERE. Now he is a celebrity chef who has a huge following. Many Bollywood celebrities are spotted at both of his restaurants, One Street and Bastian Mumbai.
ONE STREET MUMBAI
Chef Kelvin’s first bar/restaurant in Mumbai after he became independent was called One Street Over. That is the restaurant my husband and I used to go to. It looks like he opened a new one called One Street and the original One Street Over no longer exists. We fell in love with this restaurant. It is a bar restaurant with many small dishes like tapas. Everything we ordered was amazing without fail and he always had something new and creative going on.

BASTIAN MUMBAI
Bastian, a tasty sea food restaurant, is a second restaurant opened by Chef Kelvin in Mumbai. It opened shortly before we left Mumbai in June 2018. We asked Kelvin why he named it Bastian and if I remember correctly he said that it was like Sebastian in the Little Mermaid. (I’m sorry if what I remembered was wrong!) I had the best sea food at Bastian the night before I left Mumbai for good. It was also the night of our wedding anniversary. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Bastian. Needless to say it became a very memorable place!

SHOPPING RECOMMENDATIONS IN BANDRA WEST

INDIAN SOUVENIR SHOPPING RECOMMENDATION
When you travel, you might want to buy souvenirs for yourself, your families and friends. If I were to pick one store for tourists, it has to be Fabindia.
Fabindia offers small trinkets, home decor, fabric items, clothing, cream and lotions, paper products, tea and some food are all available at Fabindia. The products are reasonably priced and designed beautifully. You will have a plenty to choose from. There are Fabindia stores in many locations all over Mumbai. If you type in Fabindia on Google Map, you can easily find the nearest location from you. There is nothing like convenience when you travel.
HOTEL RECOMMENDATION IN MUMBAI
There are many options for lodging in Mumbai. I believe you will be fine finding lodging options in a good location. If you are looking for one of a kind, unique place to stay, Abode Hotel is for you. It may be geared more towards single traveler or a couple. Since rooms are quite small, unfortunately, it would not be an ideal lodging option for families with kids. It would be great for a group of women, couples with no kids or older kids. You can’t beat their location and the design is amazing. Abode Hotel is right above Le 15 Cafe.
I’ve always wanted to see the Abode Hotel in Colaba. I got a chance to see the hotel when my friend stayed there with her girl friends. Colaba is a very convenient place to stay.
TRAIN RIDE IN MUMBAI
If you are super adventurous and would to try or know what it is like to ride a train in Mumbai, HERE is a blog post I wrote as a guide to ride a train in Mumbai.
NEED A TRUSTWORTHY DRIVER IN MUMBAI?
We did not have a personal vehicle in Mumbai for the first 6 months. When I needed to go to more than 2 places and especially with my young children, it felt safer and more convenient for me to have a rental car as opposed to riding on a taxi. Therefore, I frequently used the service offered by Only Friendship Travels. They helped my family get around during those 6 months. The company founded by Sebastian Anthony has many drivers and cars that he can send. The rate was reasonable and the drivers were all good and trustworthy. Speaking from my own experience with them, I can recommend with confidence the rental car services by Only Friendship Travels.

HOW TO DRESS IN MUMBAI (INDIA)
For female travelers from outside of India, if you would not like to stand out, I recommend covering shoulders, chest area and legs. (If you are not South Asian, you will probably stand out in India anyways.) I do not recommend wearing a low-cut neckline, tank top, short pants or short skirt even though it is hot in India. It is your choice obviously. Personally when I lived there for 3 years, I chose not to wear tank top (unless I’m going to exercise at a gym), short pants or skirt out of respect for the local culture.
SAFETY IN MUMBAI
If you are a woman traveling to Mumbai, you probably want to learn about the safety for women in the city prior to traveling there. Click the link below to read about the safety in Mumbai for women.
MUMBAI AIRPORT
I think that the International Airport in Mumbai is one of the most beautiful airport designs in the world. It is worth flying into the airport just to see it.
EPILOGUE
This guide lists the places I would take my own guests to show Mumbai so that they can make the best memories of their time. Mumbai has a lot to offer and I was lucky enough to call it my home for 3 years. If you ever receive a chance to visit Mumbai, I hope that you will take it.
This guide was something that I have wanted to write for a long time. I spent days writing this blog post.
Hopefully you find my guide comprehensive, fun, and helpful.
Currently my family and I base in Manila, the city full of history, culture, and amazing nature. We are already in love with Manila. I can’t wait to explore the city and the country and share our experiences with the world.

OMG! Will this be published? It’s fabulous! Labor of love. You’ve created a beautiful guide and given advertisement to multitudes of brick and mortar businesses/ museums. In my day they would say “ your phone will be ringing off the wall”. For you, you will be receiving multitudes of blog comments!
Kaho says
Thank you for your kind words! It won’t be published in prints. Just on my blog. None of those businesses will probably realize that I have advertised for them. I’m happy as long as I can help any travelers to Mumbai in the future. Thank you always for your support!!!

Namaste from Mumbai, Kaho! Thank you for putting together this guide–as I had previously mentioned to you, your blog has been a lifesaver for many new arrivals here and I’ll share this on the community FB page! However, The Tasting Room in Good Earth recently closed permanently.

Shelly, thank you so much! I am honored to hear that my blog has been helpful for many new arrivals in Mumbai! I am very sad to hear that the Tasting Room in Good Earth has permanently closed!! That is a shame. I will remove it from my post. Thank you for the update!

Hi Kaho! Another update–Le Pain Quotidien BKC has shuttered as well. 🙁

Shelly, thank you so much for the update!!! I really appreciate it. I will add that to the body of the post. It makes me so sad to know that it’s gone because we used to go there all the time!
