Mercatino Pop-up Shop is a pop-up market with environmentally sustainable brands from the Philippines. Its first pop-up event in Manila took place on November 21 and 22. My very first pop-up market experience in Manila was 2 years ago at Artefino. Artefino is a large-scale established pop-up market with many big local brands. I remember that I was all excited and overwhelmed at the same time. Mercatino, on the other hand, is a brand new pop-up market set up in an at-home venue with vendors who are trying to get their products known. It felt cozy and very welcoming. The Pop-up event was hosted by an adorable Spanish Italian bistro nested in the cute local area of Poblacion called La Collina. You would love checking out the market as well as the bistro.
My expat friend knows the founder of Mercatino, Carol de Leon, and organized a shopping trip for a group of girls to the Mercatino Pop-up. Thanks to her, I had a pleasure of meeting Carol at the event. This is Carol.
CAROL DE LEON
THE FOUNDER OF MERCATINO & ANGKAN
Carol was born in Quezon City, Metro Manila. At age 4, she moved to the United States with her family. She grew up in California and earned a degree in business and marketing. When she was younger, she worked as a model (No surprise. She’s beautiful,) which allowed her to set a foot in the fashion world. One thing lead to another, Carol landed in a designer position and moved to Italy, where she met her husband. She spent most of her life in the U.S. and Europe pursuing her career as a designer. However, one day she felt the calling to help small businesses in the Philippines and introduce wonderful brands to the world. Almost a year ago, she put an end to her corporate job, and relocated back to Manila with her husband. She and her husband have a daughter who lives in Italy.
MERCATINO
Believe it or not, Carol put together Mercatino in 3 months. She herself curated the market vendors. Her determination is inspiring. She is also a founder and designer of her fashion brand, Angkan. Her products are created with a trained eye for design based on her previous career as well as her life experience in Europe. Her roots as a Filipina inspire her to bring in the indigenous designs from the Philippines to her designs. The pop of color in her design are whimsical. Please have a look.
Rather than my talking, I would like for you to have a virtual tour of the pop-up through my photos taken on my cell phone. For more information on Mercatino, please scroll down for a link to learn about Mercatino Pop-up Shop.
Please enjoy the photos for now. If you find anything you like and live in Manila, you should check it out on one of the days during the next 2 weekends.
