Yes. I’m writing about a butcher, Joseph Cold Storage in Mumbai.
No, this meat is not for sale.
I went to Joseph Cold Storage because according to many friends I met in Mumbai, Joseph Cold Storage is the best place to buy meat in Mumbai. Apparently they cater to hotels and restaurants as well, so they circulate quite a bit. I was told by a few friends to not go there to shop and just make a phone call and have the meat delivered to my place. The great thing about Mumbai which I LOVE about is that they deliver anything. ANYTHING! So, you can call Joseph Cold Storage to order meat and it will show up at your door! How cool is this? However, I’m a type of person who needs to see the store before I place an order by phone.
I was intimidated when I was told to not be shocked when I went there. So, before going, I went online and checked if there were any photos and I saw some on bombayjules. After I saw her photos, I felt much better and confident about going. By the way, BombayJules is one of the blogs I started checking out when I found out that we were coming to Mumbai.
There I was with my little beast. I should’ve used a higher aperture on my camera for this shot. You can’t tell what’s behind my son, can you? It’s a box full of chickens. Maybe it was good that the background is too blurry.
It was actually a very pleasant and fun experience to go to Joseph Cold Storage. I didn’t even notice the smell my friends mentioned. Maybe it was because I’m so used to it from living in Jakarta. The prices are great, too. I’m definitely shopping there. In Mumbai, there are small size supermarkets compared to the ones in the U.S. or Japan or even to those in Jakarta, but it’s still very common for people to go to individual stores to buy different items such as a butcher, vegetable and fruit stand, convenient store for dairy, bakery, etc. Life here seems so much more convenient in a lot of ways compared to the life in Jakarta. It reminded me of my childhood when I went shopping with my grandma to different mom and pop shops for food. Mumbai brought me a bit of nostalgia.
I turned the trip to the Joseph Cold Storage into a little photo session. After my son scoped the store, he sat in this huge aluminum box. I thought that this was a good photo opportunity.

How to Get There
The place was a bit hard to find for a driver if he’s not familiar with the area. Here’s a map for you in case you want to know exactly where it is. Where “A” is the location for Joseph Cold Storage. The corner of BR Ambedkar Rd. and St. John’s St. has Cafe Basilico which might be a landmark to go to the Joseph Cold Storage.
When I went, the blue sheet covered the name, so it was really hard to see and it was non-descriptive. Here’s the photo of the store from the street when I got there.
Enjoy shopping!!

Hi Kaho,
Hope you are taking your time to get settled in Mumbai. I am from Chennai city, Tamil nadu state is in the south of india. Mostly in the cities we can call up the grocery stores even the pharmacy to deliver our items. Life is very free in India. When i first moved to Singapore I used to see no smile on people face its always full of stress. Which was a rare criteria for us. Looking forward for more updates from you. Have you tried the chat which is like the street food which you can get good ones from the kopitiam like foodcourts. start with pavbhaji and samosa channa .

Dear Kaho, the butcher shop looks amazing! And the NO SMOKING policy is heaven sent! In Jakarta I would go to the wet market in in the Pasar. They airconditioned it and its so clean that you don’t smell the meat/seafood so much, but it was really smokey because of all the people smoking cigarettes so i couldn’t really go often. I admire how great you are at looking for resources online. This reminds me that I need to look for more Berlin bloggers that write about the same things.
By the way is it easy to ask for permission to take pictures of different shops there? I am still shy to ask here in Berlin since people don’t seem to do a lot of picture taking – Tweeting, Instagraming aren’t very popular here so I will really look out of place hehe. I am still getting up the courage to ask some establishments that I’d like to feature.

I have asked for permission to take photos and so far, out of probably about 8-10 times that I have asked, I was turned down once in Mumbai. I think that’s pretty good. I don’t feel as shy in countries like Indonesia and India to ask for permission to take photos as I do in the U.S. or Japan. It’s probably because I know that the chance of my getting rejected is higher there. I have also learned that taking photos at an independent store in places like Jakarta and Mumbai and the chance of their saying yes is higher than doing so at a restaurants or stores owned by a big company in Japan or the U.S. where they would more likely say no or ask me to go to the marketing department to ask about it.
I love trying to find resources online. I also love looking up locations on an online map. They both make me feel comfortable trying out new places.
