Many of you probably have heard of the blog or already follow, Humans of New York. When the author, Brandon Stanton, gets passionate with something, he gets obsessed with it. His obsession to take portraits of strangers in New York City gained an enormous number of followers. It is amazing to see how a story can be told in one single photo with a short dialogue between the author and the subject or a comment by the photo subject. Simple words from ordinary people can be so moving. I follow Humans of New York on Facebook and it always excites me to see his new posts.
I learned about Humans of New York through an article under Opinion “30 Under 30: Meet Brandon Stanton, the Photographer Behind Humans of New York” on Time Ideas, a blog by TIME magazine. I have posted a video of his interview which you can see the original on this post.

“I was engaged eight years ago, but my fiancee died in Iraq. After that, I promised myself that I’d never be that dependent on someone again. So after I met my husband, I fought marriage for the longest time. But we got married in September. And even though I was rebelling against it, and I always saw it as a meaningless formality, I’ve been surprised. There’s a comfort in knowing that you’re sworn to someone else.”

“I’m 86. And that’s about enough. I’m ready to go.”
“Aren’t you afraid of death?”
“Why would I be?”
“Isn’t that sort of a natural condition of living?”
“Not when you miss your husband as much as I do.”

“I want to be a princess hairdresser.”
“What’s going to be the hardest part about being a princess hairdresser?”
“Cutting Rapunzel’s hair.”
