If you have a saree / sari, you need instructions to wear it. I learned how to do it by seeing when I went sari shopping. It is actually not that hard. Also, safety pins are your friends if you would like to secure your sari.
1. Petticoat
When you buy a sari, you need to buy a petticoat as well at a petticoat shop. You buy them already made. Mine was 200 Rupees (US$3+) and they come in different sizes: Small, Medium or Large. You should ask your sari shop to provide you with a little piece of your sari fabric to take it to the petticoat shop. Then the petticoat shop keeper will pull out the one in a color that is close to your sari color.
2. Place a sari’s pleats in front of you and figure out where on your waist one end of a sari needs to go.
++Stitching++
I requested my sari to be stitched. Pleats can be stitched for your liking. I recommend this to foreigners especially because not only will it make it much easier for you to wear it, but it’ll save you a lot of time.
3. Tuck in the top end into the petticoat.
4. After you finish tucking in the sari all the way to the pleats, you hold the left hand side of a sari and put it around your back. The sari should come out under your right arm. Then you hang the rest of the long part of a sari on your left shoulder.
Accessorize
Sari looks great with accessories. You need to go bold and accessorize with big size earrings, necklace, bangles, bindi etc so that they are not shadowed by your sari.
You can mix and match with different bangles.
++Blouse++
Blouses are all order made. You need to calculate about 4 days from the day you purchase to the day you can wear your sari. The tailors tend to make it quite tight, so be aware when you are being measured and express your concern if you feel that the measurement is too tight.
