Puff Pastry at Hearsch Bakery Mumbai
Puff pastry dough is useful, isn’t it? Everyone needs it once in a while for baking! For example, they can be used to make pigs in blankets. What I love about it is that they help create an easy snack especially for kids parties.
I have been hearing about this “puff pastry shop” (Hearsch Bakery) on Hill Road from different expats. Unfortunately, no expats really knew the name and how to explain where it was located.
Then one day one of my friend’s gave me more detailed directions which I listed below. Since it sounded like an easy way to find, I gave myself a try. Discovering a new place recommended by my friends is always fun!
A landmark my friend gave me was Holy Family Hospital. When I passed Holy Family Hospital sign on Hill Road which looked like this in the photo below, I asked the driver to stop the car.
Things To Remember When You Look For Hearsch Bakery
1. NO SIGN for the pastry shop available that you can see from Hill Road. (Great. I have to smell it out.)
2. GO through a GATE to find the pastry shop. (A gate? Sounds intimidating…)
3. The GATE is on the HILL ROAD next to the HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL gate.
4. Once you are inside the gate, you’ll have to walk towards the BACK and the shop looks like a house.
Having gotten off the car, there I stood with the view like in the photo below for 15 seconds. Suddenly I spotted a few people with white plastic bags coming out of the black gate with “no parking” sign.
“Bingo!”
Then I crossed the street and walked into the gate that looked like below.
Having passed the building, I came to the open space where I saw a house looking building that kind of looked like a store.
Ta da!
Hearsch Bakery was packed full of customers. There were probably 20 people squeezed in this tiny space and people kept streaming in.

I purchased 1/2 kg (500 g) of puff pastry dough at Hearsch Bakery. The dough costs 140 Rupees (US$2.5) per kg, so I only paid 70 Rupees (US$1.20) at Hearsch Bakery for the puff pastry dough! Score!
Try their fluffy delicious white bread as well. The white bread if fluffy and has slight sweet taste. My kids love Hearsch Bakery white bread toasts with butter. They eat them everyday.
An apple pie is on the list to make next time I get the puff pastry.
What would you make with puff pastry?

Dear Kaho,
Thank you VERY much for posting the directions and photos on how to find this bakery. I have heard great things about since I arrived in Mumbai 18 months ago, but never took the time to look for it properly.
I found it today and bought some pastry as you have inspired me to make an apple pie, something I have not done is a while..
A friend who has since left Mumbai gave me a lovely recipe for Chicken Pesto Pillows. Enjoy!!
Ingredients:
Servings: 6
3 -4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
8 ounces mozzarella cheese, sliced
1 cup pesto sauce
1 egg, beaten with
1 tablespoon water
Directions:
1 Preheat oven to 425º.
2 Slice or pound chicken into thin pieces.
3 Brown lightly in pan coated with cooking spray.
4 Place in refrigerator until ready to use.
5 Thaw puff pastry according to package directions.
6 Roll out each sheet into slightly larger rectangle.
7 Cut each sheet into 4 equal pieces.
8 Remove chicken from refrigerator, and cut into pieces small enough to fit on half of each pastry square.
9 On each pastry square, place one piece chicken, one slice of mozzarella cheese, and 1 tablespoon of pesto sauce.
10 Brush half the edges of each pastry square with egg wash mixture. Fold over and seal with fork.
11 Transfer to cooking sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Brush top of each pillow with egg wash.
12 Bake at 425º until golden brown, approximately 20 minutes.
13 Serve with any remaining pesto sauce, or heated spaghetti sauce if desired.
