My Japanese friend organized a group to have a seafood lunch together at a Chinese shabu shabu (hot pot) restaurant, Hai Bao. During the monsoon season, we were told not to eat seafood which is the rule that the local people follow. Since the monsoon season seemed to be officially over, the Japanese friends of mine decided to go to a seafood shabu shabu restaurant as we all were kind of craving them!
After you get seated, each customer gets to pick sauces to take to the table.
The seafood that is brought to the table is not for eating raw! Everything went into the broth.
The restaurant serves Indian rice at the end to put in the broth to make porridge, but the Japanese friends of mine wanted to have the soup with the Japanese rice, so some of them brought Japanese rice in a Tupperware and cooked it instead of Indian rice. I was like “how smart!!!” The porridge was delicious and reminded us of home!!
What do you think? It was such a nice surprise to know that you could have a delicious Chinese Shabu Shabu in Mumbai, India!! We were all very satisfied! I don’t know the prices at night, which I imagine not cheap, but lunch was relatively reasonable. It was well worth it. There is something fun about sharing and picking food out of a hot pot with friends.

It’s not so easy to spot this restaurant. The landmarks are the Ramada Plaza Palm Grove Hotel and Domino’s Pizza, which is across the street from the China Gate building where Hai Bao is also located. Please note that the exterior of the building or other landmarks could change its appearance or location at any point. Please make sure to check with the restaurant for the most current situation.
It looks like there are two sliding doors to China Gate (see photos below), but the one on the left is for China Gate and the one on the right is for Hai Bao Shabu Shabu. (See photo below)
