My family and I have lived in the Philippines since July, 2018. We love it. Manila has been wonderful to us. Ever since my husband started a career which has taken us overseas, he has only been assigned to a city with a warm tropical climate: Dakar, Senegal, Okinawa, Japan, Jakarta, Indonesia, Mumbai, India and Manila, Philippines. As I have grown up in Japan and spent some years in the U.S., I have appreciated the fall season. In all the cities we’ve lived in, everyone celebrates Christmas to a certain extent. On the other hand, none of the cities above celebrate the season of fall the way Americans do.
During the time I spent in the U.S., I have grown to appreciate the celebrations and decorations of the autumn very much. No one celebrates the autumn season like the Americans do. I find it very cheerful and blissful. Thus, I do my best to create the autumn inside of our home abroad despite the warm climate outside. It actually feels like autmn in our home. Hopefully our children, who are half American and half Japanese, learn to love the season as much as the people in those countries do.
Here are some items that I recommend you acquire and bring to your home abroad in order for you to create the fall season in your home in a foreign country.
5 DECOR ITEMS I RECOMMEND FOR THE FALL SEASON
1. PUMPKINS
If you find pumpkin decoration, I recommend you buy them for the fall. Pumpkin decorations are the best to create an autumn atmosphere. As you can probably tell, I’m a huge fan of pumpkin decor!
2. PILLOW CASES
There are different kinds of pillow cases for the fall season in the U.S. I brought out these artificial fur pillow cases. They look like they will make you sweat by staring at them in the hot tropical weather, but I find these fur pillow cases great for creating a wintery ambiance. The furry pillows kind of look like a cozy warm fall/winter section, don’t they? Those were found at H&M in Manila. My favorite go-to shop in Manila.
3. ORANGE & GREEN DECORATIONS
I think the colors such as orange and sage green make the fall season more festive. I love neutral colors as you can see, but I do bring out oranges and some sage green items for the fall. Accessories in orange and sage green brighten and warm up any space.
I love white color in case you haven’t noticed. White pumpkin decors are great for my home. The white pumpkin in the photo below was one of 6 in a package sold at The Marketplace by Rustan’s in Manila. I was delighted to find them.
These cute Santas are my new finds at H&M Home in Manila. The white pumpkin is one of 6 pumpkins purchased at The Marketplace in Manila.
4. CANDLES
The scent plays a big part of creating the atmosphere for the fall season. I associate the smell of spices to autumn. Sadly my candles, which I purchased when we lived in the U.S., are almost gone.
5. FALL WREATH
I found this beautiful wreath at Landmark in Manila of all the places. Landmark is one of my favorite department stores in the city. The yellow brown leaves on this wreath bring the outside world of the fall to our home on the tropical island. It’s wonderful.
This green ceramic pumpkin in the photo below is my favorite. I used to have 4 more small pumpkins, but my son broke them last year. Click here for the story on Instagram. You can see the full set I had in the post below.

Thank you!! I love it, too! I used to have 4 more small ones, but they were broken by one monkey in the house last year. Thus, I only have one left!
