Shortly after we arrived in Mumbai, we planned a quick Colaba Tour in South Mumbai on Sunday to see The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. It’s one of the typical touristy spots in Mumbai where many visitors pay a visit. It’s in a beautiful colonial part of Mumbai. The last time the whole world heard about The Taj Mahal Palace was probably when the horrific attack happened on November 26, 2008.
When we go visit The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, we were recommended to eat at The Table which is located in the same block as The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. It was a neat little restaurant that has beautiful interior decor and great food. Their Mac & Cheese is probably my favorite one I have ever tasted. I find their food quite tasty and for the location and considering The Table being more of a posh place to eat, the prices seemed rather reasonable (keeping in mind that eating out in Mumbai is not cheap). They don’t have a baby chair, but they did not mind having a baby during the day. Please check with the restaurant about their kids policy for dinner, though. I can imagine that The Table will turn into a cool restaurant bar lounge at night. If you ever go down to visit The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, I highly recommend eating at The Table.

Thus the photo I have of the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is this… This is how it looks if you stand right outside of the building looking up. It’s a massive hotel. The gorgeous photos you see online when you look up Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai were all taken from the Gateway of India. I was just happy to see the building even though I didn’t get to glance the whole building from afar.
Next time.
Outside of The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
When we first arrived at the front lobby of The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba, I thought maybe we came to the wrong hotel. As we were driving in, I didn’t see the hotel building that I imagined from seeing the photos before. My husband and I with our kids walked around in the hotel lobby first and then I finally went to the concierge desk to ask how I can see the building just like in the famous photos. He said I should go to the Gateway of India and look at The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel from there. It made me think of the Japanese proverb “at the foot of the lighthouse”. It’s literal translation is “it’s dark at the base of a lighthouse” which means that “it’s often difficult to see if it’s right in front of your eyes”. I was right there, but too close to see it!

The Gateway of India was next to the hotel building, but to get to the entrance of the Gateway of India from the hotel, you have to walk around the fence to go to the opposite end. Since there were people everywhere on the streets and in the square of the Gateway of India and we were walking with our kids, my husband and I decided to forgo the idea. It was a shame, but we figured that since we live in Mumbai and will be here for the next 3 years, we will definitely have more chances to come back. I think it made my husband a little uncomfortable to walk with our little ones as we are totally newbies to this city and we totally stood out in the crowd.

When I am in Asia, I love going into a Starbucks Coffee. I don’t know why. I still have not gone into the very first store opened in India which is located in Elphinstone Building, Horniman Circle in Mumbai. I was happy to spot a familiar logo in the historical area of India and I could not resist going in. The touch of Indian design schematically added to the standardized design of Starbucks Coffee feels like a very nice blend of American and Indian cultures. I love how this Starbucks Coffee behind The Taj Mahal Palace has the classic colonial feel to the modern American coffee shop. The leather seats on chairs, the map wall hanging, the curtains, the condiment box, table decor, the high ceiling and concrete wall with a Mahndi like design seem so beautiful.

We heard about the horrible traffic in South Mumbai on Sundays and I didn’t think it would be that bad. I was wrong. The problem is that we started a bit too late on a weekend. This was around 11:00 a.m. I suggest you try to get there around 9:00 a.m. or go there during the week.
Happy Monday!

Thank you for the beautiful tour! (You’re right, the first thing that I thought of when I read the title of your post was the attack in 2008. It feels like it happened just yesterday…)
And the Starbucks is so lovely! I had this image that Starbucks was the same anywhere, but I guess not. Very unique and interesting!

I don’t remember seeing Starbucks in Japan with the interior decor that makes me think of a melange between Starbucks and a Japanese design and Starbucks in Jakarta, Indonesia didn’t have any Indonesian design twist, either. I wonder if it’s unique to India. I find it very interesting!!

Hi Kaho,
It looks lovely. Enjoyed the inspiring photos.
Sometime ago you published photos for chalo magazine, and address of a place in Konkan coast for rent for weekend , probably Alibaug area. Thinking about spending a weekend there. Would it be possible to have the address and phone number and photos of the villa/house, so that I can show my friends. I think it was 10 bedroom villa, self catering and can be shared.
Thanks very much. See at Zumba

Hi, Monalisa! I wonder if it was this post about Firefly in Alibag. If so, please go to the Firefly Airbnb page. They accept booking through the website and that is the only way they do, I believe.
I also stayed at Ccasa Ccomodore which I wrote in this post in Alibag for a yoga retreat. If that is the villa you are looking for, here’s their information.
