Living in a city, even in suburbs in our case, is convenient and wonderful to me. I’m 100% a city person. However, once in a while, I find it rejuvenating for my family and myself to get away so that our busy souls can rest and our tired bodies can relax. Stating the obvious here, but immersing yourself in the nature makes a big difference in the state of mind, even that is for a few hours. Especially living in the stressful time (tell me about it), I find this escape to the countryside crucial to maintaining our mental health.
If you like to go hiking, I believe there are a number of beautiful trails you can go around in Virginia. However, my family is not a hiker type. So, what do we do? Recently we went to two breweries: Harvest Gap Brewery in Hillsboro and Dirt Farm Brewing in Bluemont in one day. There are other wonderful breweries in this area, but these two breweries are our top 2 picks. (Harvest Gap and Dirt Farm Brewing are 20 minutes away from each other by car.) Since we enjoyed our time so much that I decided to introduce them to you on my blog.
You’re not a beer drinker? Not to worry. Me, either. It’s totally worth a drive to get out there for a day to enjoy the scenery and their food and other drinks. It only takes about a little over an hour from Washington, D.C. or Arlington. You will be pleasantly surprised to see a whole different world out there with a breathtaking landscape.
HARVEST GAP BREWERY
Both Harvest Gap Brewery and Dirt Farm Brewing are fantastic to take your kids and pets. Harvest Gap has a really fun playground for kids. My son spent a good amount of time throwing basketballs in the two hoops. Please see my Instagram reel for it. I joined him for a little bit and got really into it. I am terrible at making a basket (my husband and son would tease me), but I was well entertained by this game. For families with small kids, you can spend hours at Harvest Gap Brewery while kids play in the playground and parents relax with drinks in hand. In the fall, they had a corn maze and a hay slide. For cold days, both Harvest Gap Brewery and Dirt Farm Brewing have fire pits so that you can still enjoy the outside seating areas. It’s a perfect outing with your pets, too. I recommend taking blankets for cold days, by the way.

DIRT FARM BREWING
Dirt Farm Brewing has a breathtaking landscape and scenery. I haven’t been to Dirt Farm Brewing in the fall (I’ve been nearby), but I imagine that viewing the change of leaves from their location would be breathtaking. The interior of the brewery is also charming. It feels like you’re in someone’s fancy cabin. The space outside, however, is the biggest attraction to me and it allows kids to run around.

Do you see a smile on this dog sitting outside of Dirt Farm Brewing? You can’t help but smile here.
Dirt Farm Brewing is located very close to Great Country Farms in Bluemont where I took my two kids and my friend’s daughter for apple picking in November 2024. It was the first week of November. Little did I know that most places had closed their doors to apple picking in October and I learned it the hard way. Who knew that apple picking ends in October? The only place I could find that still allowed visitors for apple picking at that time was Great Country Farms in Bluemont. Thank you!!! It actually turned out to be a wonderful place for apple picking even though the season was over. I highly recommend Great Country Farms.
GREAT COUNTRY FARMS
Great Country Farms is a bonus place that I thought you might as well learn about since you are here. Growing up in Tokyo, I never went apple picking as a child. I find apple picking in the fall in Virginia is one of the most interesting, fun and memorable activities to do with your child. Do you agree?

I hope you will make some time to visit Harvest Gap Brewery, Dirt Farm Brewing, and Great Country Farms in Loudoun County in Virginia. They are popular enough that they don’t need my blog post, but I wanted to give a shoutout so that some of my lovely readers who live in Virginia may learn about them. Do you know that Loudoun County is ranked the wealthiest county in the United States? The landscape of Loudoun County is stunning, too, and my photos did not do justice. I just gave you an incentive to see it yourself, didn’t I?
Thanks for visiting my blog. It’s so wonderful to get back into it again after leaving it for so many months!
