The Fatty Bao, an Asian Gastro Bar originally from Bangalore opened a branch in Mumbai in the summer 2015. It is now a happening Asian restaurant in Mumbai that has quickly gained many fans. After I returned to Mumbai from a 2-month-long summer vacation in August, 2015, my Asian friend took me to The Fatty Bao in Bandra, Mumbai. The restaurant opened while I was away. (Mumbai changes quickly!) This expat friend of mine, who is a Chinese descent, was craving Char Siu bao. When you hear that from a Chinese person, that gives a lot of credibility to the authenticity of Chinese food served at the restaurant immediately, doesn’t it?
When I first went to The Fatty Bao with my Asian friend back in August, 2015, Char Siu bao was sold out just on that day although we were able to order char siu ramen. Anyways, it was a mere bad luck. It allowed my friend and myself to try something different, so we ordered a vegetarian bao and we actually loved it. I had gone back to The Fatty Bao once with my husband for dinner before this visit with my friend again. This time, I was able to have Char Siu bao. Since their vegetarian bao with fried eggplants was so good last time, we ordered both of them. We also ordered and split a bowl of mushroom ramen. I always enjoy trying local flare added to a ramen dish when I try ramen overseas.
What is it that so special about The Fatty Bao? Besides their food being tasty and creative, I find their service quite prompt and attentive as well. Another thing is that it’s in a good location. The interior design is eclectic and original which always score high for me because I’m all about interior design when it comes to dining experience. A quality of food and service obviously are important to a dining experience. If they are combined with a beautiful decor and ambiance, people will go back. You cannot walk in and not notice the beautiful wall mural, colorful chairs, wall hangings and table accessories. It’s got a fun vibe. I hope you will enjoy the photos that I took of the restaurant. Thank you, The Fatty Bao, for welcoming and allowing me to take photos on the spot.

The interior looks so inviting and fun! You are right about going to a place where a ‘local’ loves the ‘local food’ menu! We got spoiled in China with some amazing cuisine – even the simple noodle and broth cafes — that now we can’t eat Chinese food in most places without feeling disappointed. Ankara had a restaurant that was ok – but had a bit of a Turkish flare when it came to grading their hot sauces. Forget Chinese food in the U.S. – yuck.

Awww, I’ve never been to mainland China, but I loooooved the food in Taiwan! I also have a Chinese friend here who’s an amazing cook and I love her home cooking! Simple is the best. The selection for Asian food restaurant is rather limited for the size of city, but Mumbai’s dining scene is changing rapidly and I think they are doing well! I hope one day I can visit Turkey! You’re so lucky to have lived there!
