Wat Pho is a temple in Bangkok, Thailand where the golden Reclining Buddha rests. We visited Wat Pho after we marveled the Grand Palace. It was only 5 to 10-minute walk. We entered Wat Pho from the gate probably the furthest location from the Reclining Buddha by accident, so we walked around the premises, trying to find the Reclining Buddha. I’m glad that we didn’t enter from the closest gate since it gave me an opportunity to appreciate the architectures on the premises and build up the excitement before I had finally got to see the famous Reclining Buddha. It wasn’t an easy day for our girls though. We did a lot of walking in a hot climate, but they did a great job!
I don’t know what it was about Reclining Buddha that made me so excited, but I think buddhas are amazing. Every time I visit Kamakura, Japan, I love seeing Buddha at Kotoku-In.
By the way, the back of the feet of the Reclining Buddha is embedded with pearls. It was so pretty and smooth looking. They made me want to go get pedicure.
If you have not visited Wat Pho in Bangkok and will have a chance to visit the city in the future, I highly recommend visiting Wat Pho as well as Grand Palace. Those are the two places not to be missed in Bangkok.
This above is behind the Reclining Buddha. There is a vendor by the buddha’s feet where you may purchase a small bowl filled with coins and you are supposed to put one coin (I think) in each bowl, but my girls were so slow and jamming the line, at some places I made them put a whole bunch in one bowl and skip several bowls to speed up.
I’m not sure if it was appropriate to have fun at such a sacred place, but my kids certainly were entertained by putting coins in the metal bowls.
Wat Pho is the birth place of the Thai Massage. I will write in a separate post about my experience of getting a Thai Massage and introduce the massage place where we stopped by on the way back from Wat Pho.
