Strawberry Picking at Kampung Gajah in Bandung, Indonesia

My girls and I took a trip to Bandung two weekends ago as my husband had a business trip there. We are very lucky that our friend, Jenny, lives there and she showed us around in town on Saturday especially my husband had to work all day on Saturday. She gave us options to either go see the volcano (which is a popular activity) or strawberry picking and my husband and I thought strawberry picking would be more fun for our girls. Our girls hadn’t had fun like that in a long time. They got excited and were so happy to have gone strawberry picking that they talked about it for days after that weekend.

It was so sweet to see my little girls’ small hands pick strawberries. They both got a basket with a small pair of scissors and went around the pots of strawberries looking for yummy looking ones. My older one would grab 4 or 5 at a time and swiftly chop them all off at the same time. She was very efficient and dynamic. My younger one would bend over, observe strawberries, pick one with her small fingers and carefully clip it.

My girls picked about 2kg (about 4lb) worth of strawberries and I only had to pay IDR 100,000+ (about $12). (There was no fee before you pick and you pay for strawberries by weight.) We took them home the following day and I made strawberry jam with sugar and a little bit of lemon juice. My older one and I love it. The jam making and the home-made jam remind me of my grandma who used to make home-made jam when I was little.

娘２人を連れて２週間前の週末にバンドゥンへ、出張でバンドゥンに行っていた夫に会いに行きました。友人のジェニーがバンドゥンに住んでいるため、土曜日夫が仕事をしている間、彼女が街案内をしてくれ、とってもラッキーでした。土曜日のアクティビティーは、火山を見に行くか（とても人気のアクティビティー）、イチゴ狩りをするかの選択肢をくれたので、夫と相談して、娘達が喜ぶのはイチゴ狩りだろうということでイチゴ狩りをしに行きました。ジャカルタでは外で遊ぶ機会があまりないので、娘２人はとてもはしゃいでいました。イチゴ狩りから帰ってからも、2、3日はずっとイチゴ狩りについて話していましたよ。

イチゴ狩りでは娘2人がイチゴを摘む小さな手がとても可愛かったです。2人共バスケットと小さなはさみを一人一組ずつもらって、植木になっているイチゴの周りを廻って奇麗な苺を見つけては摘んでいました。長女は、4、5個の苺を手で掴んで全部の茎を一気に切っていました。とても効率的でダイナミックな苺の摘み方をしていましたよ。次女はというと、腰を曲げて苺を観察して、一つ手に取って、丁寧に苺の茎を切っていました。

2人で約2キロくらい摘み、その料金はというと100,000ルピア程(1000円)でした。(苺を摘む前は料金は発生しません。)苺狩りに行った次の日に2キロの苺を家に持って帰りました。そしてその次の次の日に、苺に砂糖とレモン汁を少し加えて、苺ジャムを作りました。長女と私の大好物です。ジャムを作ると、祖母を思い出します。私が小さい頃よく祖母は自家製のイチゴジャムを作ってくれました。懐かしい〜。
